Homeowners of the UK’s major energy companies have been anxiously awaiting to find out if their supplier will be raising the cost of gas and electricity before winter kicks in and inevitably they haven’t been let down.
SSE has today confirmed that they will be raising the cost of a dual-fuel energy bill by an average of 8.2%, equating to an extra £106 per year. This will mean that their customers will now pay an average annual total of £1,380.
The move has been widely condemned by energy groups, government ministers and Labour leader Ed Miliband who has already pledged to freeze energy prices for two years should his party be voted in at the next General Election. SSE have in turn pointed the finger of blame back at the government saying that taxes imposed upon them have forced them to raise their prices, a criticism they have denied.
Whilst this blame game goes on, householders will now be keeping their fingers crossed that their current supplier isn’t the next company to follow in the footsteps of SSE, but chances are that most of us will be affected by such form of price rise over the coming weeks. Once one energy firm shows its hand, the others tend to follow.
